Today we received the new ASG Ashbury Precision Ordnance ASW338LM Asymmetric Warrior sniper rifle. This new modular sniper rifle is one of the most versatile sniper rifles on the market, and delivers a complete package for the real sniper. A look at the specifications shows some quite impressive features.

- body made from high grade aluminium, ABS and carbon fibre.
- dimensions are the same as the real steel version.
- weight is about 6kg, like the real steel version.
- spring powered bolt action.
- adjustable hop-up.
- full rails to attach scopes, bipods and other attachments.
- adjustable cheek rest.
- adjustable grip to increase/decrease trigger distance.
- adjustable rear mono-pod.
- flash hider for use with the ASW338LM suppressor (sold separately).
- fold-able stock.
- approximately 330 FPS out of the box.
- custom cut hard-case.
- VSR compatible system.

First impression

The first thing you notice when receiving the ASG ASW338LM is that it comes in a decent custom cut hard-case. Upon opening you see the rifle disassembled in a nice cut-out foam padding, with some extra room for accessories. Downside of this custom cut hard-case is that it is not possible to store the rifle in this case with the bipod or scope attached, you have to disassemble each time you need to store or transport it. The rifle itself looks solid, and when you get it out of the case it feels quite heavy. The weight is about the weight the original rifle, about 6 kg’s. This rifle is surely going to make your muscles work!

Assembly

Assembling the rifle is quite easy, and does not take a lot of time. The stock is assembled with a single bolt, and other accessories are just mounted on the rails. First thing I noticed after assembly is that if you really want to have the real-deal look, you really need to order the suppressor, scope and bipod along with the rifle. Without those, it just doesn't look that “real” and lacks the look of a bad-ass sniper rifle.

That said, it’s time to put this baby to the test. Loading the BB’s into the magazine requires some work, but can be done easier with a speedloader. The loading is similar to loading a pistol magazine or midcap M4 magazine : pushing the BB’s through. The magazine holds about 40 BB’s, but since snipers try to make every shot count that shouldn’t be a problem. I do however recommend ordering a spare magazine, so you can easily switch when running empty while engaging targets.

Out of the box the rifle shoots about 330 FPS, which is not that much for a sniper rifle. We decided to upgrade the rifle right away with the M150 upgrade kit, Zero trigger plate, and 6,03x430mm Ultimate Precision Barrel. After firing a few rounds the chrono showed a 485 FPS average, which is not bad considering we went for a maximum of 500FPS.

The bolt action loading needs some getting used to, it’s not heavy but you just need to adjust to moving it from the right position. After loading a few BB’s you get the feel of it though, and it operates very smooth.
The trigger-response is quite nice, there is no need to really pull the trigger with a lot of force, but it isn't over-responsive as well. It’s very well balanced. Shooting this rifle is quite easy, when resting on it’s bipod that is. Shooting it while standing can be quite difficult, due to its weight it tends to “sway” a bit making it inaccurate. When shooting from a stationary position while resting on the bipod the rifle fires very accurate, even while not having the scope aligned perfectly we could already see the BB’s going perfectly on target.

Concluding

If you are looking for a great sniper rifle that has both looks and functionality this could be the one you need, but it does come with a price-tag. The stock rifle is not that powerful and does actually need quite some extra work and accessories, making this rifle quite expensive. We've paid about € 1000 for the total package including the suppressor, scope, bipod and extra magazine. It is not recommended to install the upgrade parts yourself, unless you really know what you’re doing. You’re best of spending a bit extra and let it be done by a professional technician.

Field Testing and experiences

After using this rifle in a few skirms, the time has come to share our experiences and thoughts on this rifle regarding usage in the field. There have been quite some issues so far, most of them are related to the rifle just being very very new. So far we've had a broken triggerplate, hop-up problems, stock issues, magazine not fitting issues and feeding problems. Our sniper, who's running this rifle, is a little bit disappointed on the performance. He has had issues nearly every time he took it on the field. The feeding issues are, as far as we've learned, not due to faulty assembly or broken parts ... the rifle's hopup is just very very sensitive. Shooting this rifle while standing isn't really recommended, it just makes the BB's roll out of the barrel. The magazine issues we're only on the spare ones we've bought, even though from ASG itself. The fitting is just poor, needed to be sanded down until they fitted. All of these issues are surely to be fixed, no doubt about it, but it makes you scratch your head if you've paid over €1000,- for a rifle ...

Overall, in our opinion, this rifle makes a great sniperrifle for a stationary sniper who has a lot of patience and is slow in movement. If you are the type of sniper that likes to move with the troops, you should probably pass on this one.

We would like to thank Unit13 for upgrading the rifle.

Added some field-testing experience to the review, might be worth reading that ... this rifle does not come without some issues and is in need of carefull handling while operating it.
